Triphala is our friend. A renowned formula in Ayurveda, Triphala translates to “three fruits”, but we’re not talking about conventional fruits like you might think. Loaded with antioxidants and numerous health benefits, this organic formula is a must in your go-to cabinet.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about Triphala.

Triphala FAQ
What is Triphala?

Triphala is a formula of three potent superfruits: Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki.

How does Triphala compare with other superfruits?

One main measure of a superfruit is its ability to support healthy antioxidant function. One of the scales to measure this is called the TEAC score. Blueberries score at about 10 and raspberries score at about 15. Triphala fruits are literally off the charts, with Haritaki coming in at an astounding 679! Nothing really comes close.

How does Triphala help digestion?

Triphala is known for its effect on the G.I. tract in general and specifically for the colon. In addition to promoting regularity, it helps maintain balance in all three areas of digestion:

  • The dissolving of the food in the stomach
  • The breaking down of fats, carbohydrates and proteins in the small intestine
  • The assimilation of nutrients in the colon
So Triphala is basically a colon cleanser?

Triphala is among the best formulas for ensuring total colon health, including cleansing. But Triphala supports digestive health in many other ways as well, such as promoting regularity and boosting nutrient absorption. Triphala also helps to remove fat deposits and toxins.

As an adaptogen, Triphala helps balance physical, mental and emotional stressors.

What should I take Triphala with?

A glass of warm water.

When should I take it?

To optimize its ability to support natural healthy detoxing take it right before bed. To optimize its ability to act as a digestive tonic, take it first thing in the morning.

Can I take Triphala with Tulsi Tea?

Yes, Tulsi is an excellent “vehicle” for Triphala, working synergistically to amplify Triphala’s actions, like increasing its ability to support healthy antioxidant function.

Can you use it daily?

Yes, Triphala is safe for everyday use. In Ayurveda, Triphala is balanced across all types of individual constitutions, so whether you are Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, you can use it.

There are many herbs that people use to clean the colon, like Senna and Cascara Sagrada that are actually quite agitating, habit-forming, and potentially harmful if used continuously. Senna and Cascara Sagrada are very useful herbs but are usually intended for more extreme situations and not everyday use.

How does Triphala work?

Triphala helps to clean the colon in several ways. Haritaki provides a mild laxative function, while Amla supports healthy pH levels. Bibhitaki enhances metabolic function, and the large quantities of tannins in Triphala increase tone in tissue and support overall colon function.

Can I use Triphala while pregnant?

Anyone who is pregnant, lactating, or trying to conceive should consult their healthcare practitioner before consuming Triphala.

I understand there are many varieties of Haritaki. Which do you use?

We use the fruit pulp only, not the seed, of organic wild green 6-lobed vijaya haritaki that is responsibly wildcrafted from the jungles of central India by Santal tribals specially trained by ORGANIC INDIA.

How does Triphala support healthy pH levels?

The three fruits of Triphala all are very alkaline and hence reduce acidity. Amla excels at promoting a healthy balance between “aggressive” digestive factors such as acids and enzymes, and the “protective” digestive factors, like supporting healthy stomach structures and resilience.

What is the best Triphala to use?

Make sure that your Triphala supplier uses responsible, certified organic wild-crafted Triphala fruits as they are significantly more powerful. Wild Triphala fruits are far superior to cultivated Triphala fruits. Buying ORGANIC INDIA Triphala ensures that it is organic, grown regeneratively, and comes straight from our small family farmers that we have trained in responsible and clean harvesting of the three Triphala fruits.

Based in India, we’re dedicated to making organic, GMO-free, vegetarian products that are created using sustainable, ethical, and socially responsible methods. Our products include teas, supplements and foods, all grown in our farmlands in northern India.

20 years ago we set out to create a herbal medicine company that was close to our hearts. Our plan was to export India’s ancient Ayurvedic medicinal wisdom, in the form of herbal formulas and supplements, to the West. Yet after witnessing the critical and toxic state of India’s agriculture, we realised that our mission would be far better served working across the supply chain ourselves, starting with the health of the land and the farmers, all the way through to the consumer. We now work with over 2000 rural family farmers to cultivate over 10,000 acres of organic farmland in India.
